In the next instalment of TPTGLIAC – Tiny Places to get Lunch in Adelaide CBD (OK so the name needs some refinement) – I would like to introduce Mamachau. Located down near the corner of King William and Pirie Street, this little almost hole in the wall eatery is here to deliver some of the best bao you could ask for.

PSX_20181105_211059.jpgFor those wondering what bao is – I somewhat envy you as I would love to go back to not knowing, and get to try them for the first time all over again…. As a simple explanation, think of them as China’s version of a slider, with delicious Asian delights stuffed into a steamed bun ready for consumption on the go.

As for the fillings at Mamachau, these will change from time to time – including a bao of the week – but expect things such as masterstock pork belly with mustard greens, hoisin, peanuts and coriander; Korean fried chicken (KFC) with Asian slaw and kimchi mayo; grilled eel with pickled ginger, cucumber, hoisin, peanuts and coriander; or silken tofu with Asian slaw and kimchi mayo.

They also dish out fresh rice paper rolls, Asian salads and rice boxes if the baos are not to your fancy (or you just want something different). A side of lotus root chips can also be arranged. Buuuuut we all know what you are really after here!

With a few dollars being enough to get you into the Mamachau bao market, this can be a very cost effective way of having a quick flavour hit, or potentially buying one of each just so it’s easier than making choices. Not that I would ever do that of course….that was a friend of mine. There are a handful of seats if you want to hang around, but it may well be a grab-and-go affair.
